Work sector. Today, we are already living in

Work environment
in 2020 may be very different from today (Chang, 2017). By then, I would
be 26 and would have just obtained my Bachelor Degree in Accountancy. I would
be looking for a job relating to audit or tax in the accounting sector.

Today, we are
already living in the term called ”           The
Fourth Industrial Revolution” where technological innovations could leads to
the displacement of workers in many sectors (Schwab, 2016). By 2020, having technical
skills alone is insufficient. We need to have good interpersonal skills and
ability to make decisions, effectively and ethically amid the constant changes.

This further emphasizes the importance of soft skills today.

One of the
weaknesses I need to overcome would be my emotion
management1. For someone like me who have just entered the
workforce, poor emotion management would affect my work productivity and
efficiency.  It gives the impressions to
my colleagues that I am incapable in keeping my negative emotions in check. They
will thus feel that I am difficult to get along and work with in the era of social
capital2. In a workplace that consists of clan, adhocracy or
hierarchy culture (Quinn Association, 2005), it is unsuitable
for me, as I tend to be anxious and nervous when working with people. This
suggests that I lack the traits of emotional stability3.

With the constant
changes in the work environment, my low
resilience factor could affect me in a big way. Even with the forecasted
employment rate to be at 2.1%, I still need to prepare for job uncertainty. With
the advancement in technology, an accountant can be irrelevant in the future. This
means that I could be jobless when I graduate in 2020. I might be emotionally
overwhelmed as I will not be able to manage such challenges.

The solution to
the above weaknesses could be mentoring4
(Boon, 2013, p. 83). Being an alumni student in NYP5,
I am able to acquire a vast network of developers. Then, I would find
assistance from the various industry leaders to know more about the skills that
companies are looking for. Another possible solution is utilisation of my strong area – the traits of conscientiousness6.

Even though I am weak in interacting with people, I can use my strong area to
brush up my soft skills such as improving my interpersonal communication
skills.

Other possible
weakness could be my introvert
personality6. As such, it might be detrimental in a work
environment as we are dependent on each other. Thus, I might be perceived as
shy – not speaking up in meetings or voicing out opinions. My colleagues could also
perceive me as passive-aggressive (Christina Park, 2014). This could
affect my team negatively if I do not voice up my ideas and opinion when
working together. For example, during my time in RSN8, I observed
that coxswain and seaman have to work together in order to ensure the safety of
the craft. Seaman has to do lookout duties and inform the coxswain of any
crafts that are approaching them. Thus, I feel that there is a need to speak up
in the future for the greater good of the organization.

Regardless of
whether I am a senior employee or someone who had just joined the company, I
would definitely find myself in situation where I would make mistakes. Thus, ownership is an important insight that
I need to have. If I am able to take ownership of the tasks assigned to me, I
can able to take up responsibilities and lead my team to success. Without
ownership, I might do slipshod work, which would in turn leads to costly rework.

This will leads to a negative impact on the standard set and that my team could
get discouraged and disgusted with my unprofessionalism.

To tackle these weaknesses, I would recommend
the use of solution that involves both self-efficacy9 (Boon, 2013, pp. 125 – 127) and self-monitoring10 (Boon, 2013, pp. 128 – 129). This will
boost my morale so that I will be able to endure tough times while upholding my
professionalism. In order to do so, I can improve these weaknesses by doing volunteer
works – helping out in an old folks’ home and even helping out in a pet
shelter. By doing, I can help contribute to the society and also at the same
time, develop my teamwork skills (Marcy Ogbon, 2014). This would also in turn leads
to the development of my positive attitude towards for the future in 2020 upon
my graduation.
