We all heard about domestic violence and how it can affect someone extremely harshly. It can happen anywhere and anytime of the day. Sharon M. Draper included domestic abuse in her novel Forged by Fire .This essay will include quotes from the actual book and show what domestic abuse really is. Domestic violence are “behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want (thehotline 1).” It doesn’t always need to be a partner but, can also happen to a child. Imagine walking outside and hearing yelling from a nearby home. If you do hear anything like that, call the domestic abuse hotline immediately. As I said before, domestic violence or abuse can happen anywhere and anytime of the day. Some signs of domestic abuse could include if your partner tells you that “you can never do anything right (thehotline 1).” or even harsher, “Intimidates you with guns, knives or other weapons.” At this point this is called domestic abuse. People stay in this position because they are afraid that something might happen to them in other words, the person might intimidate them or even harm themIn the novel Forged by Fire, there were definitely several types of abuses. Domestic violence/abuse probably stood out amongst all of them. Jordan who was Monique’s husband and Angel’s so called father had been domestically abusing Monique and her two children, Gerald and Angel. Jordan would hit them, call them mean names and harass them. Jordan even molested Angel several times in the book but, that is another topic. Gerald seemed very strong about the issue and he even wanted to fight back. For example, when Jordan had hit Angel one time, Gerald stood up to him and said, “Don’t you ever hit her!” (Draper 27) Angel and Monique were typically afraid of him. This resulted in them to always be worried. Forged by Fire is an incredibly realistic novel and the abuses can happen to anyone in this world. Research says “On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men (ncadv 1).” This proves that several people get abused just like in the novel. The novel handled this issue by having Gerald as the stronger character who sends Jordan to jail. Later at the end of the book, Jordan dies in a house fire and the family never sees him again. To conclude this essay, domestic violence can happen anywhere and be as close as right right next to you. Do not be afraid to stop it. Someone just like you can be hurt emotionally and physically. The domestic hotline is: “1-866-331-9474 (ncadv 1).” You can make a huge life changing impact into someone’s daily life and make them happier each and everyday.
