told us that we can form their own multicultural groups or either they can be
assigned. The class chose to assign ourselves. As such the lecturer gave us
some time to form our group so we selected our group members and formed a group
of six. We were familiar to each other faces as we all were class mates; but at
that time everyone introduce himself/herself to others. Then we took contact
numbers from each other. We also discuss a bit about our group assignment that
what needs to be done. Everyone shared their ideas on the project. Our group was
formed to undertake two presentation on leaders of our choice. The first task
that we needed to do was to pick a leader and I was chosen by the other group
members to lead. As a group the, first challenge faced was how to organize the
work and how to complete the task on time. As group leader I decided that
everyone should go and do research on the question we needed to answer and then
send me the work, as I was creating the PowerPoint. All the group member
participated in the task and all sent me sufficient work that I included in the
PowerPoint presentation along with the information that I had gathered. Once I
had completed the PowerPoint presentation, instead of picking myself who would
do which slide, I felt that it would be better if the group members picked
which slide they wanted to do. This decision was primarily based on the fact
that we had recently had a seminar about leadership styles and I wanted to a
democratic leader. Our first
presentation was based on Jack Ma and what his leadership style was.  Once we had complete the presentation we
waited for the feedback. The feedback we received was the following: –

good background to Jack Ma and a critical assessment of his rise to become the

presentation. This time we had to answer, weather leaders are born or made and
apply this to our leader from the last presentation and another leader. The
feedback we received was the following:A good compare and contrast of Jack Ma and Jeff Bezos in
terms of the leadership development. There was some useful coverage of
leadership theories and a debate about whether leaders are born or made. The discussion
of transformational and transactional was helpful but could have been applied
to the people being examined in a little more detail. Not really sure why other
‘leaders’ such as Alexander the Great, Tsar Nicholas II Napoleon and Hitler
were included and this did detract from the quality of the presentation. Positive aspects·

particular things which I liked in Leadership Development. These include the
way the course was how it was presented, I think the slides which were shown in
the lectures where very informative but yet simple. I think that in the
seminar, key things were explained very well and by the end if you had paid
attention, you would have a clear understanding of what was talked about.  For example I didn’t know what the Bases of
Social Power French and Raven (1959) was before this course now I have a clear
understanding of it and how its principles apply to modern management. As well
as knowing what the different powers are and the positive and negatives that
come with that type of power. For example the referent power based refers to a
manager who is able to influence a follower because of the follower’s loyalty,
respect, friendship, admiration, affection, or a desire to gain approval. The Expert
refers to a manager whose ability to influence other parties is based on
expertise and knowledge. The Legitimate power refer to manager whose power come
from the position they hold, such as CEO. The Reward power refers to ones
ability to give rewards, like promotions, bonuses, good working conditions,
when someone achieves the expected results. The Coercive power refers to
manager who are the opposite of reward managers, these manager use fear to make
their subordinates. These topic has allowed me to see different power available
to manager and I believe this will significantly aid in my future endeavors as a
manager. I believe I
that I have learn a lot of things while taking contemporary business issues,
which have improved my general knowledge of modern day business issues. One
particular aspect that has improved my knowledge is the contemporary issue of virtual
leadership. Before the seminar I thought that virtual leadership was when
managers weren’t present to lead to their teams and the group are capable of
working with the manager being present. However virtual leadership is a team
that, for the most part, is linked through communication that is not face to
face—e-mail, voice mail, telephone, videoconferencing, and Internet-based
forums.Before starting
the course I had little knowledge of leadership traits; I new the different
type of leadership style there were but when it came to the different traits, I
didn’t know much. According to Storey (2004), the study of leadership in
organizations has evolved through the years with changing theories of
leadership and leadership development. Storey (2004) identifies the main
theories as trait theory, behavioral theories, situational and contingency
theories, exchange and path-goal models, new leadership (charismatic and
transformational theories), constructivist theory, leadership with learning and
post-charismatic and post-transformational theories. Kirkpatrick and Locke (1991) state that
great man theories were based on the assumption that leadership qualities were
inherited, particularly by upper class men. In other words, these theories
asserted that great men were born, not made (Hoffman et al., 2011). Great man
theories evolved into trait theories in the early 20th century (Judge et al.,
2002; Kirkpatrick and Locke, 1991). Proponents of these theories argue that
leaders possess traits or characteristics that make them different from other
people and give them leadership advantage. According to Derue et al (2011) criticism of leader-trait
paradigm has led to the development of behavioral theories of leadership which
assume that leadership capability is not inherent, but can be learned. I found
these leadership traits to be the most interesting and along with the other
traits, it gave me a more clear understanding of what make leaders. I think that
one of the key aspects of the module was its ability to improve interpersonal
working and the ability to work within a group dynamic. The resolution of
issues, coordination of effort, and maximization of individual skills through
delegation are all highly transferable skills, with weakly session covering
topics such team roles, leadership’s styles, leading and managing change
further improve these skills. A group or team can be understood by looking at
Tuckman and Jensen’s (1977) model of group formation which comprise of forming,
storming, norming, performing and later adjourning. According to Tuchman and
Jensen (1977), the forming stage of a group involves clarifying common
interests and roles to be played. From the group work undertaken I have not
only further improved but also I have learnt that co-operation is vital for
effective teamwork. Acknowledging and respecting other opinions and viewpoints
while maintaining the willingness to examine and change personal beliefs and
perspectives are some of the skills I have seen an improvement in. I also now
have a more clear understanding of the importance of accepting and sharing
responsibilities, participating in group decision-making and effective communication.
This overall has allowed me to develop skills in exchanging of ideas,
discussion and also how to relay and support my own viewpoint with particular
aspect which I though was a problem with this course was the fact that some
detail of the course, such as what the assessments was or what we were required
to do for the assessment weren’t communicated well enough and whilst this might
have been mainly down to the lecturer that was meant teach my class was ill, I
felt that there wasn’t enough information provided. This along with the
rescheduling of the class felt that we were at a bit of disadvantage compared
to the other classes, however after a few weeks I felt we had gotten back on
track and things were being example a bit better.

Overall as a
future manager, leadership development has significantly furthered not only my
leadership skill but I have gained a greater understanding of how leaders operated
and what make a leader good. Over the course I have learnt many new theories
and models such as the Social Power French and Raven (1959), the great man
theory, Belbin team roles, other leadership trait theories, Tuckman’s stages of
group development, the managerial gird, situational leadership and many more. I
have also seen an improvement in my ability to not only work in a group but
also leading one. I feel being chosen as group leader has improve my decision
making, as before I tended to be a bit indecisive when it  came to making decisions. The course has also
showcase that I need to further improve my presenting skill and be more
confident when presenting in front of a large group of people. Over the period
of the course I have seen great self-improvement that will certainly have a positive
effect in future career choices.
