On sunscreen bottles the sun protection factor (SPF) is marked to give you a measured of how much UV rays are getting through to your skin. If you are very fair skin you will want to use a higher SPF to help introduce your skin to the sun. If your complexion is not as fair, you will want to use a lower SPF to still allow you to become tanned. Once you have determined the number of SPF your are going to use, apply the lotion to the places on your body that are going to be exposed to the sun. Make sure it is completely absorbed into the skin to receive the maximum benefit of the sunscreen. 
Now, that you have applied your sunscreen, you need a place to sit or lye down. Although the sun shines everywhere, you want the skin that is exposed to the sun to receive the maximum rays possible. Therefore, you need to angle your chair or towel in a place where the sun will hit you directly. This is important so that you receive an equal amount of sun and achieve the same shade of brown on your whole body. However, you are also encouraged to move while you tan in order to create an all-over browning effect. If you prefer not to lounge around all day but still want that perfect tan, an alternative is no take a walk or play a sport, either way your skin will come in contact with the sun. 
The next step is to watch the time! It is important to be aware of the times in the day to tan and when to avoid tanning. Doctors recommends that you avoid tanning between the times of 10am and 4pm. (Slevin, 2018) During this time in the day the sun is very strong, even on a cloudy day.  Therefore, the last thing you want is to be burned because red does not magically turn into brown. With that said, it is almost challenging to tan at times that are not between 10am and 4pm. Therefore limit yourself from the sun during these times and take lots of breaks. Do not worry, by keeping your eye on the clock you can still get that perfect bronze colour. 
After you have spent a good amount of time in the sun it is recommended to take a shower in order to remove all the lotion, sweat but also to keep your skin looking the best it can be. This is also when you will see how tanned you are! When you are finished moisturizing your skin, you are encouraged to put after sun cream on to minimize your chase of any burning.  
One day under the sun will set the base for an awesome tan but will not give you an instant dark skin tone. Like any other thing, practise makes perfect! The important thing is to keep your tan and make it last. Sun bathing for consecutive days is recommended to make a noticeable difference. However, being aware the sun can be damaging, so sun protection is strongly recommended.
