Engaging and
empowering youth through access to technology and media

Youth make up about 18% of the world’s population, which
makes them an essential element in the prosperity of any nation. To raise a
promising nation, we have to start with the youth as they are the future. The
engagement and empowerment of youth through media has been a continuing goal for UNESCO as technology and media have been playing an
imminent role in the structuring of society. One of UNESCO’s approaches for
empowering youth is YouthMobile, which is a push initiated to encourage young
people to gain confidence and basic skills to develop, sell and advertise
applications. This programme was initiated in 2014 by UNESCO’s communication
and information sector to help provide young men and women with new experiences
and job opportunities.

The United Arab Emirates cares deeply about its youth and
their development, and has taken several steps to ensure that their voice is
heard, and that they are capable of expressing themselves in real life and
through media and technology. One of these steps is The Arab Youth Media initiative, launched by Shamma bint Sohail Faris AlMazrui,
Minister of State for Youth Affairs in order to set up a generation of media experts
who would have a positive impact on the Arab community, the Arab Youth Media
programme comes under the support of ShaikhMansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy
Prime Minister. The Arab Youth Media initiative’s strategy is to offer advanced
training in the media field for the youth of 22 different Arab countries in
order to distribute Arab media content globally.
