Post the Civil war, the government steps to reduce the concentration of Plain Indians to some small reserved places gave rise to a long and ferociously battle full of violence. Hundreds of the Indian were killed in wide spread violence including women and small children.  The Indians were asked to give up their lands and move to poor and un-fertile places. The white regarded the plain Indians as un-tolerable and the one who were coming in the way of expansion of the West.
After the discovery of gold in the Colorado region the war spread in that area with White arriving there in a big way and their attempt to push out the plain Indians from that region.  The Sand Creek and Fetterman ugly massacres, also brought up a national discussion and consideration over Indian policy. With the massacre of large number of Indians in New Mexico & Arizona, war with Apache tribe began there also. In another battle, called ” the battle of little big horn” Custer led a caravan into the Black hills, in search for gold which eventually led to stampede and broke into a war when the government ordered the Indians to be confined to  reservations.  Custer’s defeat also marked the series of battle, where the Plains Indian suffered from their constant efforts to resist the invasion of their land by miners.
There were many factors behind the defeat of the Indians in their war against the Whites during this period. The most important single reason was vast difference, which was created in the military powers of the Indians and White due the availability of Colt six-shooter and repeating rifles, which the White acquired, post the civil war. Earlier the Indians have advantage as by the time the White solder were able to re-load their rifles the Indians could shoot thirty arrows in the meanwhile. One more important factor was the tactic used by the White soldiers of attacking the plan Indians during wintertime when the Indians were usually divided into small bands and thus were in position to fight with the White army.
Another factor, which critically influence the Indians ability to fight for long, was availability of food, mainly the buffalo. These buffalos were not only a big source of food but was also for clothing, tools, fats for grease, etc. With a large number of buffalos getting killed during and immediately after the civil war the availability of this multiple of resources dried down for the Indians and thus weakening their forces.
The Native Americans faced injustices that ranged from warfare to economic exploitation, which remained a significant theme throughout American history.
