                              HONOR KILLING IN INDIA

Abstract

Honor killings are usually acts of death or murder committed by people who are held to have brought dishonor or shame upon their family. In my opinion Honor killing is defined as a death that is awarded to a woman of the family for marrying against the parent’s wishes.it is usually the female who is murdered for bringing shame to the family. it is a complex issue which has been misunderstood by the family or society for many years. honor killings are directed mostly at women and girls. although rarely, men can also be the victims of honor killings. honor killing is a gender-neutral concept but the majority victims are women, the term honor killing is applicable to both men and women. The only difference which I see is that male accused of dishonor may be given a chance to explain his situation and can escape the death penalty by offering compensation to the family who has been dishonored. women are rarely given opportunities to explain their sadness and they have no other way. This tradition was first viewed in its most horrible form during the Partition of the country in between the years 1947 and 1950 when many women were forcefully killed so that family honor could be preserved.

                                       HONOR KILLING IN INDIA

Introduction

Honor killings are usually acts of death or murder committed by people who are held to have brought dishonor or shame upon their family. Honor killing is a form of domestic violence and killing the people of their own family on the belief that they have brought dishonor to their family due to their actions. killings in the name of honor have been reported from Asia, Africa, and middle east and mainly in Pakistan. Honor killing has many methods which are forced a suicide, stabbing, beating the victim, hanging, acid attacks which are very commonly done to woman, burning.

Reasons for honor killing

Honor killing is the result of one of the following cases, women dressing in a manner unacceptable to the family or society, refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, falling in love with the person of another caste or different religion, being the victim of sexual assault or harassment in the public-Girls and Woman are killed at much higher rates than men in this kind of situation, having an inappropriate relationship with others. women seeking a divorce even from an abusive husband or committing adultery may bring dishonor to her family and these reasons are sufficient to trigger an attack on her life.

Bringing honor through a forced marriage

If an unmarried woman or girl being harassed or being raped with a man, then the family of the girl may attempt to restore their honor with the wedding the girl with the man who has dishonored the girl.in this situation, the girl has no choice but to accept the marriage. The family of the man is also expected to cooperate to marry the woman.in many cases, the woman who is supposed to marry would attempt to do suicide in order to escape the marriage.

Forced suicide

In this method, the victim is forced into committing suicide to avoid facing the torture by their family which they suffer as much as worse. In many cases, a forced suicide may be a substitute for an honor killing. The family members do not directly kill the person who brought dishonor to their family, but force the person to commit suicide, so that the family members can avoid the punishment, such suicides very common in Iraq and Iran. In many cases the person him/her self-hang or commit suicide in the thought that their family would punish him/her.

Use of minors as perpetrators

Often, minor girls and boys are selected by the family to act as the killers, so that the killer may benefit from the most favorable legal outcome. Boys and sometimes women in the family are asked to control and monitor the behavior of their sisters or other females in the family, to ensure that the females do not do anything to tarnish the honor and reputation of the family. The boys are often asked to carry out the murder, and if they refuse, they may face serious repercussions from the family and community for failing to perform their duty.

Conclusion

We have so far discussed about the present time issues of honor killing. Honor killing incidents have been reported from every part of the country. Honor killing is the most inhuman and irrational crime. Honor killing is done for saving the honor of the family. But there is no honor in killing any person. No culture has the right to kill and harm women based on their perceptions of morality or dishonor. The freedom of belief does not mean freedom to kill. Everyone has the right to live with full dignity and equality. Laws cannot do much to prevent it but it can only be prevented when there is a change in the mentality and mindset of the people and that is a difficult thing in a country like India where the caste, religion, gotra, clan, etc. matter more than the life. Laws can only punish the criminal but they cannot prevent the crime to happen, so it is very necessary for people to rise above the clouds of caste, religion, clan, etc. so active laws are the only antidote to such dishonorable practices.  The real honor is in protecting the family members and being liberal and open-minded in the approach towards life and not by being stringent in thoughts and attitude.
