            The
Mars mission seems
inevitable. Office12 But there are some problems, which
should be solved, with the Mars mission. Political problems, economic
problems, environmental problems and engineering problems are just a few
examples fromOffice13  these problems. Landing
is one of the engineering problems. In this essay, there will be detailed
information about landing problems during the Mars mission. Office14

SITUATION

            The
Mars mission has been the subject of science fiction, space engineering and
scientific proposals since the 19th century. The
plans include suggestions to land on Mars, eventually landing and terraforming
the planetOffice15  Phobos and Deimos. The investigation of Mars has been a goal of national
space programs for Office16 very long time. Historically, Mars was unfriendly to
Earth’s attempts to visit itOffice17 . Missions to Mars had been
attempted more than any other planets in the Solar System, and nearly half of
the attempts failed. Mars was the first planet which Earth attempted to
explore. As a result of this situation some of these failures happened. Also
these failures gave some important experiences which have made subsequent
missions more accomplished.Office18

ResearchesOffice19  which are related to Mars mission, made since the 1950s. Office20 As a result of these researchesOffice21 , many plans occurredOffice22 . Planned duties are generally drafted
and typically being stated as taking place in the next 10 to 30 years. Office23 The list of human mission plans in
the 20th century shows various mission proposals put forward by numerous
organizations and space agencies in the field of research. In 2010, countless Chinese, European
and American agencies are making suggestions for humanitarian missions to Mars
and are now developing and testing technologies.Office24

Getting Office25 Mars is hard. First of all, Mars is 77 million kilometers
away from Earth. During the journey a small trajectory error can result in a
big detour and or even missing the planet completely. Landing is another
challenge aboutOffice26  Mars mission. Solar flares can damage electronic systems.
This situation can finish the mission at the beginning. Also, Office27 Martian surface is not absolutely flat. It
is full of obstacles-massive impact craters, cliffs, cracks and jagged
boulders.  Last thing is landing slow
down. Space crafts should land slowly because sudden landings can damage the
crafts. Office28

PROBLEM

            There
are many problems related to Mars missions. Environmental problems, political
problems, economic problems, engineering problem ethical problems some examples
of these problems. When humanity decide to go to Mars for colonializing
problems of Mars mission starts with landing problems. Solar flares and Martian
surface are biggest cause for landing problems. First example for landing
problems is caused by solar flares. The space environment isn’t friendly.
Hazards range from what engineers call “single event upsets,” as when
a stray particle of energy passes through a chip in the spacecraft’s computer
causing a glitch and possibly corrupting data, to massive solar flares, such as
the ones that occurred this fall, that can damage or even destroy spacecraft
electronics. This is an important problem which we need to find a solution for
landing to Mars. Another problem is caused by Martian surface. Mars doesn’t
exactly put out a welcome mat. Landing is complicated by difficult terrain. The
Martian surface is full of obstacles–massive impact craters, cliffs, cracks
and jagged boulders. Even the toughest airbag can be punctured if it hits a bad
rock. Unpredictable winds can also stir up further complications. (Explore the
landing sites for Spirt and Opportunity). No matter how hard it is, getting to
Mars is just the beginning. Rob Manning, manager of Mars Exploration Rovers
entry, descent and landing operations, said: “The challenge after we land is
how to get the vehicle out of its cramped cocoon and into a vehicle roving in
such a way as to please the scientists.” Last problem is about landing
slowing down. Space crafts should land slowly because sudden landings can
damage the crafts. The Martian surface is not flat and space crafts are heavy. Sudden landings can damage the
crafts. It seems the major problem to solve with the technology that we have.

RESPONSE

            There
are many challenges and risks about Mars mission. Also, there are some possible solutions for these problems. There are three
possible solutions for landing slowing down problems. The first possible
solution is Air-Bag Landing Systems. This system is designed to provide
omnidirectional protection of the payload by bouncing over rocks and other
surface hazards. With this way damage on space crafts can protected an
important percentage. The disadvantage of this solution is related to weight.
The airbag weighs 453 kilograms (half a ton). It increases the total weight.
This weight can effect to efficiency of other components of space crafts.
Second possible solution is The Sky-Crane Landing System. The Sky-Crane Landing
System eliminates the dedicated touchdown system and lands the fully deployed
rover directly on the surface of Mars, wheels first. This solution can be efficient
but this system is developed to use rover mission so; it should be modified for
human missions. Last possible solution for landing slowing down is Touchdown
Sensing. During the touchdown event, the commanded up-force fluctuates
depending on the specific geometry of the terrain. Also this system can
increase the efficiency but this system is developed to use rover mission so;
it should be modified for human missions like second system.

Office29 EVALUATION

            The best possible solution is
touchdown sensing. With touchdown sensing, the damage on landing can be
significantly reduced. Also, this system isOffice30  not increase the total weight of
the space craft. Martian surface is not absolutely flat. The Martian surface is
full of obstacles massive impact craters, cliffs, cracks and jagged boulders.
Even the toughest airbag can be punctured if it hits a bad rock. Touchdown
sensing provides an efficient opportunity to protect from these problems.

CONCLUSION

Mars is the most similar planet to Earth Office31 (according to scientists). The Mars mission seems inevitable.Office32  According to scientists like Buzz Aldrin, Stephen Hawking,
Elon Musk, Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson, building a human colony on Mars is

for these problems. Office33
