Information systems is a set of tools, processes and standards that makes us to manage information in a strategically and an efficient work to support business processes to make a better decisions. Information systems play a crucial and important role to accept inputs from different sources and generating information from the outputs which are useful in managing an organization.In simple words information system is nothing but arranging of people, data, process, and informational technology which interacts and collects, store, and processing which provides as output  the information needed for an organization. Information system provides the solution to a problem.Evolution:                Over the 50 years, the growth of the information systems made significant progress. The research also increases drastically and now a days cloud computing playing a crucial role all over. The most usual type of information system used in an organization is four-level hierarchy which includes workers, middle managers, senior managers and executives at the top.Evolution based on periods is as follows:1950’s – EDP Transaction Processing SystemDuring this period the Information system was mainly used for Electronic data processing (EDP) using Transaction Processing System (TPS) to modify, collect and retrieve the organization day to day transactions.1960’s to 1970’s – EDP’s to MIS’s:After the invention of first business computer in 1951, Management Information System will came into existence in this period and the enhancement was to provide the detailed, summary and exception of the information.1970’s to 1980’s – PC’s and DSS’s:In this period PC’s personal computers are came into existence and within a short span they were developed even more better to support the interactive process and finally Decision support systems were introduced which supports in the decision making while interacting.1980’s to 1990’s – EIS and the Internet:At this period the organizations started purchasing their own hardware and software based on their department wise needs. Even the executive at the top level did not use their MIS reports or DSS so the concept of Executive Information system EIS is developed to analyze the business performance and economic developments to support strategic support. Whenever the PC hardware, software and telecommunication evolved rapidly the wide spread of adoption of TCP/IP network or Internet came into existence as well.1990’s to 2000’s – Artificial Intelligence AI, Expert System ES, Knowledge management system KMS.The growth in the internet allows the artificial intelligence (AI) techniques into the business information systems which minimizes the human intervention to handle the more complex tasks. Coming to the Expert systems (ES) plays a crucial role in decision making and even diagnose human illness, making financial forecasts and many more. The Knowledge management system are mainly to support the organization level and business knowledge within the organization like help desk systems and internet access.2000’s to Present – e commerce, mobile computing cloud computing:The rapid growth in the internet and technology changes the way of business and the concepts of e commerce and internet banking makes the business even more easier to reach to the common people and the organizations are also started using this technology as a way to reach the people like social networking like Facebook, and Twitter.Even the Big data, mobile and cloud computing in the latest era of smart phones, tablets, and social media and rapid growth in the wireless technology evolved very fast and improves the business and communication day to day.
