Tourism is progressive
in nature. History records a great deal of interest in tourism back form the
Empire Era to the Modern Era. The Empire Era began from the time Egyptians to
the Greek and at last came to an end with the fall of Roman Empire. During that
time people started travelling in large numbers for purposes such as
commercial, educational or business. The various factors that influence travel
during that era were safe and easy travel, legal system for protection of
personal safety, widely accepted currencies etc. The Egyptians travelled for
pleasure and business whereas the Greeks travelled for pleasure and were the
ones who shaped modern day travel. Currency exchange and communication were two
factors that lead to advancement in travel and tourism. The Romans were known
for their prosperity as it showed in the development of travel during that time.

During the Middle
Ages and the Renaissance Era travel almost disappeared. Travel at that time
became dangerous and periodical. The breakdown in the previously controlled and
organized society resulted in the fragmentation of transport systems, languages
and currencies making travel a dangerous and a difficult experience. Gradually
with time travel began to emerge and the merchants began to venture a little
away from their villages. Trade routes began to re open as commercial
activities grew. In the modern era i.e. the early 1900’s leisure travel became
possible for the middle and the working class. Millions of people were
introduced to international travelling. This also led to the emergence of Mass
Tourism. Mass Tourism could only be developed with improvements in technology
and allowing the transport of mass of people in limited period of time.

Currently tourism
is the largest service industry in India with contribution to the national GDP
and providing employment. India witnesses more than a million foreign tourist
arrivals and the rate of growth is expected to rise in future. The Ministry of
Tourism an agency for the promotion and development of tourism in India
maintains the Incredible India campaign. The Incredible India campaign was a
slogan started in 2002 by the ministry to promote India as a tourist
destination. Having the highest 10-year growth potential, World Travel and
Tourism Council has reported that India will be a tourism hotspot from
2009-2018. It has also been ranked 14th best tourist destination for
its natural resources and is also on the list of World’s attractive
destinations. Moreover,
India has been ranked the “best country brand for value-for-money” in
the Country Brand Index (CBI) survey.

DISCUSSION:

Explaining further the Incredible India campaign showed
India as an attractive tourist destination highlighting different aspects of
Indian culture. The project also got a lot of criticism as it was said that it
failed to highlight those aspects of Indian Culture, which could make India and
attractive tourist destination. In 2008 the Ministry of Tourism had launched a
campaign that targeted the local population and aimed at educating them
regarding the etiquette and behavior while dealing with foreign guests. As an
impact India emerged as the fastest growing market in Asia in terms of
international tourist spending. Many other campaigns such as God’s own country
was started to promote the tourism of Kerala and others like Soul of Incredible
India for promotion of tourism in Orissa and various others ads and campaigns have
led to a significant increase in the tourism of India as it has created more
awareness globally amongst the people. Increase in tourism has contributed the
economy in a positive way. It has led to contribution in government revenues,
improved environmental planning and has also raised environmental awareness. Just
like a coin has 2 sides everything
have a positive and negative impact. Tourism has also contributed to the rise
in the pollution level, depletion of natural resources such land degradation,
water resources etc.

Tourism and Aviation industry correlate each other. Aviation
industry is a part of the travel industry, which deals with air transportation
from one destination to another. Tourism and Airline industry share a symbiotic
relation in today’s modern world. Airlines offer a convenient, time saving and
luxurious option for travel and tourism and strive to attract people to travel
by giving them the comfort zone of a home. It is difficult to say which one nurtures
the other, as the progress of both is interdependent.

As the government became more aware of the flourishing
tourism industry it became necessary to develop international airports to
facilitate the growth of the airline industry. In todays world travelling is
more concerned with holidays and leisure activities. The demand in the current
world is rising as the airlines help a large number of to work and move in an
efficient manner. The growth of the airlines has also helped create a million
of job opportunities and provided employment to the jobless people. Airlines
are a faster way and affordable way to travel from one destination to another
hence promoting tourism. The cost of air transport is directly proportional to
the demand of the customer for the same. Reduction in cost will make airlines
more preferable form of transport for the tourists. It has increased the
accessibility of destinations in terms of time and distance. Measuring capital
and current expenditures can access the overall impact of travel and tourism.

The adequacy in the system of air is essential for the development of tourism
globally. Thus there is a powerful synergism between the growth of aviation
industry and international tourism.
