I have watched a number of videos on educational leadership and management and now I understand that these are two different factors that drive an organization. To begin this discussion, let us first define organization. Organization is a group of people who work together in an organize way for a shared purpose, according to the Cambridge dictionary. This group of people is consist of leaders and followers.
Some people can be good leaders but cannot be good managers, some good managers on the other hand, cannot be good leaders. As good managers need to learn to be good leaders, good leaders have to strive to learn effective management skills. One thing I learned from Dr. Shafali Nagpal an associate Professor from BPS Women University, is that, leadership plays a vital role in managing an organization.
There are quite a number of leadership theories and it is quite a broad topic but I will only talk about three of those in this paper. The trait leadership theory, behavioural leadership theory and the situational leadership theory.
The trait leadership theory assumes that people are born to be leaders, they are born with inherited leadership traits such as being confident, adaptable, dependable, influential and smart. The behavioral leadership theory states that leadership traits are learned, and that leaders are teachable. Meanwhile, situational leadership is all based on being able to adapt to any situations.
As mentioned earlier, leadership plays a very important role in management as it includes planning, organizing, directing, controlling, communicating, motivating, supporting, coaching and mentoring to mention a few.
In order to achieve a successful learning and to suit everyone’s need in the organization, the people involved in leadership and management must be able to ensure the good balance in both.
Just like management skills are learned I do believe too, that leadership skills are learned. I strongly believe that good leaders are made, they are not born contrary to the Trait theory. To be a leader, one needs training, experience, the knowledge and the skill to work with others to achieve goals. It is a skill learned and developed over time through trainings and practice.
In the traditional academic arena, there is only one that holds the leadership and it is the principal or the headmaster. This person has a broad responsibility at school and that in order to lead and manage effectively there have to be additional people to help him achieve the goals. These include a team of social workers and teachers that head each departments.
The school leaders face day to day challenges that include strategical management of resources both human and material, and the environment, managing behavior and attendance among the members of the organization, and ensuring good teaching and learning just to name a few.
As we live in a world that is dynamic, teaching and learning also change over time. Therefore good leaders should be able to be flexible and adaptive to respond to the different situations including generational gap issues in the academia.
