Diversity Lessons “What Have we Learned?”Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. Some of the categories are race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background and more. Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others. Although having many different cultures and races in a workplace can be very beneficial. There are also some problems that can occur with many different people coming from different places there is a possibility for a language barrier. Which is a problem for communication and delegating tasks. Glass ceiling is very evident within the workplace and should be addressed. Human resource professionals need to figure what works best for the company while making the workplace equal, like having so many minorities or women as employees.Race Cultural diversity is on the rise in the workplace, many different companies are realizing the benefits and competitive edge it gives them against other corporations. For example P&G is a big consumer goods corporation and is ranked 10th on the most diverse companies. Business is steady for them and will seek increase soon as we go into the new year. P&G trophies diversity and the increase in different races, cultures and genders within their company has brought them much success as they continue to grow their brand globally. Diversity in the workplace can have many benefits such as an increase in creativity, Increase in Sales, improves employee performance and gives the company a positive reputation. With people of different races and backgrounds they’ll have many different ideas that could contribute nicely in important discussions. Having employees of different races allows more customers to come in and be understood easily which would increase sales. Equality in the workplace is important for encouraging workers from all backgrounds to feel confident in their ability and achieve their best, when they feel comfortable the more productive they will be. Companies who recruit and encourage individuals from a wide range of backgrounds generally gain a reputation for being a good employer such as P. Potential clients often feel more valued and thus give more business to these organisations. WomanGender diversity is vital in the workplace if you want to continue to strive and blend with the worlds continuous social changes. Woman have fought many years to try and get equality in the workplace, although they have not fully achieved it they are slowly but surely achieving their goal. With woman bringing different viewpoints and ideas it allows better problem solving and creativity. A recent Gallup study shows how having a woman in the workforce can improve a company’s financial performance. Gallup studied more than 800 business units from two companies representing two different industries, retail and hospitality, the data gained finds that gender-diverse business units have better financial outcomes than those dominated by one gender. This is only one of the many examples of how gender diversity improves a business, other companies should take note of this and identify units that are less diverse, develop a hiring strategy that increases gender diversity and promote inclusiveness and cooperation amongst the employees. With these changes the company will hopefully see better financial success and continue to improve on it.Glass Ceiling Although there are many improvements and changes that are happening within the workforce, there are also many occurrences where the glass ceiling effect occurs. The glass ceiling effect is an unofficially acknowledged barrier in a profession, especially affecting women and members of minorities. Some barriers are pregnancy, age, disabilities and sex. As stated before, these problems are not talked about out loud, but they are certainly there and need to be addressed.Pregnancy Pregnancy is a big factor for a woman and glass ceiling. Many cases have happened where women have been let off or denied a promotion for being pregnant. It has gotten to the point where woman will not get pregnant or try and hide their baby bump to try and avoid problems such as these. Sex Just like pregnancy, sex is also a major glass ceiling in the workforce. There has been multiple occurrences where it seems as if a woman will never or rarely get a senior position in a company or even a promotion but man may get the spot easily. These glass ceilings are all noticeable in the workplace each day. It is a problem for many, but if brought up changes can happen, for example P&G co. has to hire a certain amount of women each year. Employers need to take note and make sure they are fairly interviewing each and every candidate for the job or position. In the end diversity can be very beneficial with the increase of profit, reputation and creativity. We can look for an increase in diversity in many different companies as success continues for others. Human resource managers also need to remember to keep note to fairly interview each candidate and try to avoid glass ceilings as much as possible. As the world changes each day the workplace norms will change with it and if businesses would like to stay on top they will make the logical change and do what’s best and diversify the company.
