Before taking this class, I had never thought much about leadership.
But now, I realize the importance of leadership and the huge role it plays in
making a person successful. After reading the textbook thoroughly and going
through various HBR articles, I have summarized below the five attributes that
I look for in a leader. These are:
– The actions and integrity of leaders help them establish credibility for
themselves in the minds of their followers. Leaders stand by their vision &
values and their resilience bring confidence and trust among the followers.
Their actions are always aligned and integrated towards leading people in
attaining common goals.
Courage – Leadership
is about chasing the unknown and it involves a lot of obstacles. Leaders exhibit
the courage to overcome the fear of uncertainty and continue to persevere. The
perseverance and confidence in their vision provides moral support to their
followers to stay on course in times of difficulties.
– Leadership is also about people and communication and their ability to
work as a team with the objective of achieving a common goal. Leaders
consistently express themselves and share their thoughts with great clarity to
others. Communication is of paramount importance in to them as their role
involves a lot of delegation and coordination and leaders are regularly
involved in communicating their vision and values to their followers and team
– Leaders delegate tasks to others and encourage them to progress in their
endeavours by bringing the best of them through constant motivation and
inspiration. Leaders stand as exemplary role models for their followers and
help them to go beyond boundaries and psychological barriers. Leaders are
always inspiring their sub-ordinates and followers through their vision and
Vision – The
most important quality in a leader is to have a vision for future. Even a great
management team would fail in the absence of a vision. The objective of a
leader is to have grand vision for human beings and mobilise his or her
resources in attaining those goals. A leader sets the direction and drives the
change even if it involves challenging the status quo.
