Architecture is the perfect amalgam of science, art, and innovation all for the common good. Architecture is not solely well thought-out structures, but the weaving of the urban fabric to achieve cultural continuity. I firmly believe that good design is an effective solution to a complex problem and any person subjected to it will feel its good without noticing. Architecture and architects have and will continue to have an immense influence upon the human condition and quality of life. Everything the eye sees has been designed – from the sidewalk curb to the stop sign to the skyscraper. Architects have the opportunity to intervene in the creation of spaces and, in turn, the fellowship of a thriving community.Quality of life is directly correlated to quality of space which is why design is vital to everything that surrounds us. At the core of our profession is the design of community centers, and by this I do not mean in the literal sense of these terms. Architects design places where people meet, work is done, friendships are formed, and community emerges. Architects largely impact socialization and community engagement. The placement of certain elements or the intensity of light within a space can transform a space completely. Architecture has the ability to evoke an array of feelings and alter the user experience. This is important in all places – whether hospitals, houses of worship, schools, museums, dwellings, among others – where people live and hope for the better.Along with this, architecture is representative of a time period, of a people group, their beliefs, culture, and societal structure. Therefore, architects and designers play a major role in defining our culture. Looking back at ancient cultures and studying archeological remains, we see parallels in the structures built with daily lifestyles in mind. In essence, architects and architecture are the catalysts which take us from present to future. Architecture gives identity to a cityscape and makes its people proud. Construction and renewing buildings will always provide jobs, stir the economy, and develop urbanization, to bring progression to our societies and improve quality of life.Architecture and design is all a matter of scale. Designing at a small scale will always have an impact on the rest of the world. The dimensions of space, the scale of ceilings, the configuration of spaces all have a positive impact on our creative processes and our ability to learn. For example, when designing a chair, one would look at the dimensions of a room and see if it is apt for the chair. The room by itself is one single component of a building. The building is one part of a block, which is part of a city, which is part of a country, which is part of the world. If developing generations were to cultivate the concept of world citizenship and responsibility through architecture, it would dramatically alter the way resources are spent, waste is managed, and value of decisions are taken. If architecture changes one individual, it will eventually change a family unit, changing the neighborhood, changing the city, changing the nations. Cities did not simply appear, but are the constant execution of carefully planned out components by architects and planners. However, in cities such as Detroit, sprawl has become inevitable but abandoned space could be improved to provide new spaces for existing residents. When architects design we have the power to convene people who make up our unique cities. As architects attempt to seamlessly stitch designs unto the project sites they achieve cultural continuity, giving identity and a sense of place to a monotonous space otherwise. Growing up in the Houston suburbs in a trailer park I did not have anything good to get inspiration from. In a place where gangs, drugs, prostitution, and alcohol were rampant, the neighborhood was unsafe and unsuitable for growing children. Despite my background, I chose to see the beautiful even in the worst of situations and dreamt of a better future for my family once I finished college. Whenever our community would get a new restaurant or play area it would bring so much joy and life! Spaces such as these, even if unremarkable, bring dignity to people that are ostracized due to socioeconomic status. Architecture brings hope to areas that are left unwanted, untouched, forgotten and restores the heritage of a people. When individuals are seen, heard, valued, and known, communities change for the better and American dreams are fulfilled.Design truly has the ability to address the needs of people and improve living conditions. When architects leverage design of the built environment they strengthen community ties and slowly solve chronic societal problems. I am personally thrilled at the idea of crafting a structure because it gives me hope that I can make a difference. Design and technology facilitate the ability to enhance the human experience and improve the environment in which we live. As designers, we possess great responsibility in creating a better tomorrow in such a way to give back to the community from which we came. When we join the hard design skills with soft humanity skills, we achieve a promising future.
