A child’s development begins
as soon as they are born and can be measured in a number of different ways. Even
though all children’s development can happen at different times, the path in
which they develop are roughly the same as they need to have developed one
skill before moving on to another skills for example first learning to walk
before they can run. A child’s development is not just a case of them learning
to walk and talk but also the physical, intellectual, language and emotional

In a child’s first year from
being born they would begin to shuffle and crawl and some children are able to
pull themselves up onto the furniture to stand balanced and stagger across the
furniture or use an adult’s support. Within their first year the child would
also master the art of rolling from their front on their backs without any
help. When the child is around 5-6 weeks old they will be begin to develop a
smile which will then develop into a laugh. When they reach more toward the age
of 1 they become a lot more curious about objects and begin to pass objects
between hands and looking for things that are hiding. Within this first year their
teeth will also start to appear for some children which mean they are possibly
introduced to solid foods.

When in between the ages of
1 and 2 then child would begin to walk and also start to pull and push while
walking. They will also begin to enjoy playing with toys that needs to be
picked up and banged together for example musical instruments or they may build
small towers with blocks. As the child becomes closer to 2 years old they will
tend to gain a preference on which hand they prefer to use when handling objects
such as crayons. Now that the child is showing a preference to which hand to
use they enjoy to try and feed themselves with finger foods or even using a
spoon. As an enjoyment a child at this age also learns and expresses waving
goodbye and hello, pointing to the things that they want and also shaking their
heads as a sign of ‘no’. as the child grows to the be in between the ages of 2
and 3 they are capable of dealing with their emotions and are then able to
express when they are really happy about something and when they are not which can
lead to tantrums and outbursts. Children at this age are also able to express
their uncertainty of new situations for example starting nursery and the
development of fear of not only the situation but also of the people they are
unsure of. On the other hand once they have started nursery children tend to
become a lot more inquisitive. Their grip on holding objects in their preferred
hand such as pencils crayons and pens their marks on paper progress into
scribbles. A child’s play also becomes more experimental at this age for

At the ages of 3 and 4 children
begins to gain more independence and like to do things for themselves for
example going to the toilet. Their motor skills will also still be developing
but at this age they are able to run, jump, climb even walk up and down the
stairs by themselves taking one foot at a time. As
children reach the age of 4, nurseries and schools are able to be more diverse
and equal in terms of the activities children can pick. Staff members tend to
let the children choose rather than choosing for them. For example, girls are
able to develop their motor skills with throwing and aiming activities, or even
building activities, which would once have been classed as a male activity.
Whereas boys are able to develop their fine motor skills by being able to
choose activities such as colouring, drawing or crafting which were once
stereotypically activities for girls. Children at this age are still quite problematic
at tantrums and outbursts. However the child should be more aware of their
emotions and are capable of understanding what they did wrong and why they are
given a time out if done so.

A child’s confidence at the
ages of 5 and 6 develop immensely, they are able to form friendships with a
number of other children and gain the confidence to play outside in activities
such as climbing, jumping, riding a bike. By playing outside especially in
local playgrounds their confidence continues to go by becoming more social and
making more friends that do not go their nursery or school. However, they will
still want the approval of an adult first. The child’s education between these
ages continues to develop and they are able to more pencil control and are able
to copy shapes and letter. They also begin to show signs of understanding early
numeracy and literacy for example being able to count to 10 or higher and also
being able to recognise the order of the alphabet. Once at the age of 6 writing
becomes a lot more fluent as being able to copy letters are now put into words
and sentences. Six year olds are also a lot more independent as they learn to
get dressed on their own and learning to do buttons up and tie laces.

During the ages of 7 and 12
children enjoy playing team games as they have now developed hitting a ball,
running, jumping etc. However, until around the age of 9 children tend to
underestimate their abilities in physical activities. Some children start to
show a real interest in certain activities and will develop their own hobbies
and interests for example joining a sports team, reading, learning to play an
instrument. Children at this age put a lot more importance into their
friendships and will become more settled with many children having preferred
friendship groups.

Between the ages of 12 and
19 a child’s body goes through the biggest change which is when puberty occurs.
Girls tend to show puberty in the earlier stages of this age bracket in
comparison to boys. It is commonly known growing from childhood into adulthood.
Once boys begin to show signs of going through puberty both sexes are beginning
to develop more maturely and physically. A child’s self-esteem between these
ages can be very fragile and can appear to be a lot more vulnerable. Adult support
and guidance for children this age is essentially needed as even though their bodies
are changing and they themselves are maturing their emotions are mixed and can
become very confused.
