A bureaucratic organization is a form of management that has a pyramidal command structure. A bureaucratic organization is very organized with a high degree of formality in the way it operates. A strict command and control structure is present at all times. Bureaucracies are meant to be orderly, fair and highly efficient. There are two fundamental characteristics of bureaucracy. The first being the hierarchical structure, this allows for defined layers of management to have more authority over lower level management. The other is rational legal authority, a set of objective laws, rules and procedures as the basis of authority and direction for the organization. (Max Weber 1864-1920)
The bureaucratic organizational structure seems to have negative impact on the gym in a number of ways which. Firstly, it can be argued that the structure of the gym goes against the desires of the trainers. Trainers, such as Philip, reported being bored and uninspired after being assigned the same class for more than a year, this is a result of one of the main disadvantages of the bureaucratic structure. this structure can bring about boredom into the workplace as specialization is an important factor in bureaucracy. in addition to the statement previously made, rational legal authority takes away a lot of autonomy from the trainers. for example, Jane joined the gym under the impression that she was going to have some control over her classes, she was assigned a fixed schedule instead. The bureaucratic structure is set up in such a way that only managements can appoint tasks and delegate responsibilities. This can lead to job dissatisfaction as well as a possible increase in staff turnover rate.
As much as the bureaucratic organizational structure negatively affects the gym, in a number of ways it has proven to be quite beneficial to the gym. Firstly, the gym is said to have a number of 50 employees. With this business structure managing these many employees would not be a difficult task due to the layers of hierarchy the structure implements into the organization. With different layers of hierarchy there will be managers with increasing responsibility higher up the hierarchy. There is also a very direct line of communication which goes to-down, meaning once a decision has been made at the top, by the owner, CEO, manager etc. it is then implemented throughout the lower layers of the hierarchy all the way to the bottom. Moreover, with fewer people making increasingly more important decisions up the chain of command, decision can be made quicker which saves time and money. In addition to the number of advantages, the gym has a schedule for classes which means they must keep some type of records of the people that sign up for the classes, the bureaucratic structure allows these types of records to me easily managed. The information is stored in such a way that it makes it easy to locate information about any one individual within the registered members of the gym, which saves time and money.
