Strong, ruthless, ambitious, beautiful these are the words that would best be used to describe Lady Macbeth. Manipulating, two-faced and cold-blooded are also the first word that comes to mind when describing her personality. She would seem like the type of person that is strong minded and and have everything together, sadly that is not the case. After the death of Duncan Lady Macbeth acted all calmed and composed unlike her husband. However she later experience delayed guilt from the murder of Duncan, whom she first pushed Macbeth to kill, reliving the traumatic experience in her dreams. Lady Macbeth has shown signs of intrusive memories, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in emotional reaction ( prezi)with these symptoms it can be predicted that she has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder otherwise known as PTSD. It is an anxiety disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a traumatic event,as well as causing the patient to relive and have upsetting dreams about it which can explain why Lady macbeth had been sleepwalking (Yadao, prezi). “As she is troubled with thick coming fancies that keep her from rest.” (5.3, 38-39)People with PTSD experience t different kinds of symptoms such as; nightmares or unwanted memories of the trauma, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, heightened reactions, anxiety, or depressed mood.( Mayo Clinic). Lady Macbeth has shown signs of intrusive memories, negative changes in thinking and mood, changes in emotional reaction. One evidence that can prove so is “Nought’s had, all’s spent, where our desire is got without content: ‘Tis safer to be that which we destroy than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy.” (3.2, 6-9)What that mean is here she is basically saying that the grief and the guilt of being alive is not any better than being dead. She is showing survivor guilt.
